How to Earn Money as a College Student in India? Let’s Find out. But before we begin I just want to clarify that, this article is mainly for those who are studying in their 11th to graduation, and not for school students. But if you want to follow this, just remember that school education is important and you must focus on your studies along with this side hustle.
Let’s begin.
I’ll share my point of view, as to Why you need to have your side hustle while studying, and I’ll let you know about my past journey, and how I got earning through genuine means of side income.
While we are students in the class 11th or 12th or graduation, We generally have much time for some additional activity. Generally, we tend to spend that time going to the movies or playing games, spending time with our friends in the hostel or watching TV or OTT at home.
But for those casual expenses like buying a T-shirt, shoe of your choice in your budget, of your favourite brand, or getting a ticket for a movie of your favourite actor without asking your parents is all you need while you are in college.
And if you are like me and don’t like to ask your friends for help financially, you need to have some kind of side hustle. But working aside from your studies, generally in a cafe or a small corporate company, is not a good idea at all.
I’ve worked in many companies and have done all sorts of odd jobs for a few bucks every day less than Rs.100. Trust me, this thing has not changed at all in India right now as well.
Right now, the opportunity lies in the Digital. Working on a laptop is the ultimate choice you should opt for to make some side income.
While it seems easy to work on a Laptop on a desk, it’s not that easy at all.
Generally, while we are students our thought process is like to get some easy money in our bank account. But easy money always goes out easily. Even most of the time, you get caught in some kind of cheating or deceit by the fraud companies to do part-time jobs like form filling, captcha verification etc.
But don’t fall prey to them. I’m talking about legally earning money, a decent amount, which can cater for your monthly food, clothing and other expenses besides your study expenses as well.
I’ve kept this under the first point. Why? Because I’m a Freelancer. I work online for my clients to get things done for them and get earnings out of it.
Freelancing is a democratized version of a job. Where you can complete the individual tasks at the price, place and job of your choice.
In Freelancing, you can do various tasks online, such as Graphic Design, Online Consultation, Sales, Web Design, Web Development, Online Assistance, Video Editing, VFX and a lot more.
Generally, you can earn a handsome amount for your daily expenses as a student.
While I was a student back in 2012, there were many platforms like Fiverr and Upwork, they’re still there, but now things have changed. I don’t recommend them in 2024 at all. I would tell you to directly approach potential clients on social media, email, WhatsApp, or call any way you are comfortable with.
Try to find out a problem about them or their company, If you can deliver the solution, then you can charge for it!
isn’t it amazing? It’s kind of an outbound consultation. Manier cases initially you’ll get rejections, but don’t put any high-end expectations, Just go with the flow and keep completing all the small to big tasks. Become the master of your craft, Trust me while you leave your college with a degree, you’ll have a side business ready to take over and continue with a much better pay scale than your friend’s campus placement CTC package.
For Online Freelancing, you need to have a skill. And there’s no better place than learning those skills free initially from Google and YouTube.
Generally in the beginning, you can earn somewhere around 10000 rupees every month which can go up to 100000 or 1500000 a month, if you become the master of your craft and start working for international clients.
While I was starting, I initially started by watching YouTube videos and reading blogs on the internet. They shape your path and give you a clear direction.
And one more important thing, don’t take advice from those who are not related to freelancing, have never done it, your college seniors, or someone from your friends, family or relatives, Just keep it secret. Work in silence, or else you could get demotivated.
As of 2024, the in-demand skills that I know are Graphic Design, Video Editing, Content Writing, Photography and Videography. If you know about this stuff, you can survive now and in the future.
Keep a deadline of 3 months to 6 months, watch the tutorials, and practice on a PC or laptop. Make a portfolio on Instagram your website, or platforms like Behance and start searching for clients. That’s it. I know it’s not easy, time time-consuming, but there’s no other way to do freelancing.
Yes, This is the skill, that requires consistency, consistency in writing, posting, editing and distribution and brand building.
Initially, you can start with YouTube and Instagram. If you are better at speaking These two are the best platforms to begin with.
But if you are shy of the camera, but good at writing, or speaking then you can start your podcast or your blog, but growth in a blog requires patience and consistency.
Generally, you can create Content in 4 ways: Videos, Written content as blogs, images as posts for social media, and audio as podcasts.
Try to find a niche, that excites you, that you have experienced since your childhood, that you like to watch on your phone, and find out the future potential of it, and work on a thing where you’ll not get bored doing it for multiple hours every day.
While YouTube and Blogging are direct sources of monetization Google Adsense, Instagram or other social media platforms may offer sponsorship through various companies after you get substantial followers or subscribers on your channel or platform.
Find other content creators from your niche try to replicate them in the beginning and take inspiration from them, you’ll get traction in the beginning few months.
To begin your content creation journey, you can start with your mobile phone camera and your laptop, and if you grow then you can upgrade your equipment and tools with professional tools and all.
Those above two methods have worked for me, and I'm still doing those two as my primary source of earning, but the below ways are the ones, that I've done in the past or generally available as an option to go for.
I’ve taught as an offline tutor in the past for digital marketing students at a local technology institute in my local city for a few months. Although the scope is very low, you can try to get an opportunity if you are good in any subject or any skill and can put time and effort for it.
But this is a very hectic job, teaching requires a lot of patience in the first place. But for Online tutoring, you can do webinars, and live classes on Zoom, or Google Meet, or even you can launch your prerecorded courses on a website and sell them through paid advertisement campaigns.
If you ask me whether to choose offline tutoring or Online tutoring, I’ll suggest Online, because it’s a dynamic way to teach online. The payments you get in advance, You can teach from the comfort of your home. You can grow your audience and network easily with online tutoring.
This one is for those who can’t start something for themselves or don’t like to work online. You can start with a part-time job in your local city, local schools, colleges, or offices in an administrative or office executive or sales executive role.
Don’t just do the part-time job to get a salary in the mind end, rather try to observe how things are working, how you can start a similar business of your own, Try to cultivate an entrepreneur mindset.
You can even work in a hospital, travel and tourism sectors to get more exposure to the real world and trust me the reality will hit you harder.

If you are an avid reader of my blogs, then you must have seen that I’ve been promoting some products on my blogs which are may be related to Amazon products or something related to hosting or payment gateway or something like Adobe software, which I use to generate some extra income, if someone purchases the product through that link then I get a small commission out of that.
If you are coming from a well-to-do background, then you can start trading in the stock market. But for that, you must have an in-depth knowledge about it.
For a smaller side income, you can work with online apps such as Zomato, Ola, Rapido, Swiggy, Zepto etc to get work on commission-based deliveries.
Offering social media and digital marketing services to businesses in your nearby city can also give you a decent amount of money. You can help them in regular posting, and promoting their business, you can promote them as an influential content creator in your local city in the local language or even you can try to do that with their social media handles.
You can do campaigns for them on social media, to get more reach and generate leads for their business.
You can write for other platforms as a freelance writer. For eg. in my blog, sometimes I hire writers to write on specific topics that they are experts in, or if they have ample amount of content writing experience, then that gets much more beneficial for me, saving me tons of time.
if you are good at presentation skills, you can try to work as an event planner or a host at multiple events in your local city, for that you can consult with big event companies in the city.
After your college is over in the evening or morning time you can try some side gigs, like selling fast food, or some other selling stalls, which can drive multiple footfalls and generate you a good income. But try to do it as a brand. Promote on social media and try to get exposure as a business owner.
Always remember to keep a healthy balance between your studies and work, and make a distinct time for your own life as well. Try to explore, travel and entertain yourself. As only working or studying can get you bored. So enjoy the college days, but part-time, or in some leisure time try to make some extra gigs for an extra income.

Because I’m staying in Guntur, finding peace in the city is very difficult. The main reasons are Noise pollution from vehicles, overpopulation and no such place to rest, relax for a moment.
Even though many parks are available, you can’t connect with nature there as they are all located near the city’s main road. And if you’ll try to relax there, you’ll constantly get the noise of vehicles and other city noise.
I got to know about this park recently from a close friend. When I visited for the first time, I was quite shocked, As the parks situated in the city cost Rs.25 for entry, whereas Nagaravanam park entry ticket is just Rs.20 only. You can pay through your UPI apps as well.

Carrying multiple variety of trees, and protecting the greenery of the city, this place is perfect for relaxing your body and soul.
You’ll find many varieties of trees, but among all of that, these red sanders trees park is something different, There are chairs available for the people to relax, sit or take a nap. This place is also accompanied with drinking water, toilets and other gaming activities for children and adults.
A beautiful serene place, with greenery alongside your way to completely trek around the park centred by a huge mountain.
This trek is enough for your daily cardio workout if you just walk every day surrounding this park.
You join Gyms, with heavy equipment and monthly hefty prices, but 20 rupees a day is not that much costly. the timings of the park are from 9.30 to 5.00
If you can manage the timings of your work, then there’s no better place than this to detox your body, get some cardio workout by walking and connect with the serene nature.
As of now, I’ve visited three times to the park, but each time I visit, this park gives me some amazing new visuals and experiences to connect with it. Can’t ask for more.
Generally, if we are living near Guntur, we try to travel to the Bapatla beach, or nearby Krishna river in Vijayawada or malls in the city to watch cinemas.
But relaxing with nature near your home, just 20 to 30 minutes away from your home, has something different to offer every time you go there.
Remember to take a bottle of drinking water, as with a longer walking trek, you will feel to have more water because of excessive sweating and fatigue.
It’s not like Gandhi Park, with very few trees that can be counted, but it’s a reserve forest with mountains and wildlife in it.
As you can see in the picture no humans there because very few know about this. I request you all please visit this place. Please visit and take your friends and family there. with the introduction of faster processors like Qualcomm snapdragon, more than 13-15 hours of battery backup, 5G fast internet connectivity, and Dolby Atmos sound, the experience is out of the world and a lot better than consuming on a phone.

UPI or Cards, Which Payment system is faster in India? Digital payments have become a norm and part of daily life in India. For eg, we most often every day, use UPI with enabled apps like Phonepe, Google Pay, Cred, or Paytm for every small to big purchase and daily transaction.
While digital transactions are making our lives easier, and making us truly cashless, but it’s a game of speed that entertains both parties of the transaction.
For eg. if I go to a restaurant, after my dinner, I should be able to pay as faster as I could have paid the same bill with my cash in my wallet. It should be that much seamless and efficient.
And fortunately, with the initiative of Government of India, UPI is doing great and works much better now, comparing to the previous years.
From opening the payment app, then scanning the QR, then paying the final payment, all becomes faster within a fraction of 15 to 30 or 45 seconds duration max.
While it’s considered very much faster and efficient and makes you truly cashless, but there’s something that we are ignoring and could be much faster than this.
UPI is a payment system with a Unified Payment Interface as its full form denotes that the infrastructure and interface are exactly the same in any payment platform or device.
If your mobile number is connected to your bank account, then getting UPI enabled is just a matter of seconds only.
As in the case of Debit or Credit Cards, You have to carry them physically in your bag or wallet and have to swipe them or insert them in the PoS machine to make the payment. But it’s now like that anymore.
There’s something very interesting that I’ve experience.
UPI payment is always a smart choice to go for when are doing any kind of e-Commerce transaction, as it’s free of cost, and you don’t pay anything extra or any service charge to the government or the payment gateway or to the vendor as well.
Because UPI is an Open Source platform is FREE to use! There are no charges you have to pay for any kind of transaction.

Generally, if you open a bank account, through any Indian bank, Generally you get a Debit and Credit card, depending upon your income or credit history.
If it’s a Debit card, it’s already known as an ATM card. You generally withdraw the money that you’ve deposited money in your savings account. while in the case of a credit card, it’s the money that you get as a loan from your bank or any financial or NBFC institution in India.
So after utilising the credit card amount, the bill of your expenses will be generated every month and you’ve to pay it before the due date to avoid any kind of interest or extra charges or getting your financial credit score damaged.
This is the exciting and main point of this article! I will divide it into 3 points and explain them in deep.
If you compare UPI vs Cards, UPI stands superior as it’s cashless and cardless. You just need to carry your smartphone with you. You can travel all over India without any need for cash or a card if you have your phone with UPI enabled payment system.
if you are in a restaurant and going to pay your bill by Swiping your Card through the PoS machine or inserting it into the machine then UPI is greater, as it’s cashless and intangible. you just need a QR card and pay with your phone, and again for the second time UPI is the owner, but let’s look at the third case where UPI is loosing!
If you are at any restaurant, cinema, or petrol pump and you want to make your transaction or digital payment faster, and you are in a hurry, then what you can do is if you’ve a debit or credit card with Wifi or Wireless payment-enabled in it, you’re good to go. Just being your card from your pocket like you do in the case of a phone, and touch the PoS machine. and go!
Here you are just taking less than 5 seconds to complete the transaction. Whereas in the UPI it will take the same 30 seconds to complete the whole process of scanning, entering the amount, PIN and payment completion.
So in the third step Card is the winner.
So I would recommend keeping your card safe and keeping a maximum payment limit in it, to avoid any fraudulent transactions, except that you’re good to go!
You can pay faster at any place just by a tap!

One of the key advantages is that WhatsApp Web allows you to avoid cluttering your desktop with more apps. It works exactly like your Android WhatsApp but without any call or video call features.
As an agency owner replying to the leads is the most priority thing for me. When I get any lead on my WhatsApp Business App, I get a notification on my Desktop web login, if the client asks me about my catalogue and pricing, I can easily share it from my desktop web app, as it’s not possible through the Whatsapp Windows App.

In Freelancing, you sell your skills in the form of a service like Coding, App or Web Development, Design, Multitasking, AI, Coaching and more.
After the Covid pandemic, New startups or big corporates are not keen anymore to have a branch and have extra expenses for employee management, rather they outsource their work from a remote freelancer.
Similarly, the new generation is keen towards working for a single company and stuck for 9 to 6 in a cubicle and working for them for a lower payout.
So, in the saga of getting independent and earning a livelihood, freelancing in India is booming like never before.
In this article, I will clear some doubts regarding Freelancing and try to solve and answer some of the most widely asked questions related to that and offer insights to aspiring freelancers.
In a traditional job setup, There are certain rules to follow, There are official times to begin and end the work. There are certain dress codes, and rules to follow in the workspace. You’ve to work at a fixed cubicle desk and complete the tasks for an employer for a fixed salary at the end of every month.
But in Freelancing, you are an independent taskmaster. You take tasks as per your knowledge, skill, and ability, with the budget that you quote of your choice the place that you would love to work, the time of your choice, it doesn’t matter if it’s day or night.

No, not at all. Rather it’s quite the opposite. When you work under an organisation, you don’t have accountability towards the final client of that company, rather the top managerial hierarchy takes care of that.

You have to manage your finances, your schedule, deadlines, payments, invoices, and everything as a one-man army.

So Freelancing is hard. You’ve to bear many hardships of your own clients, Some of them will take you for granted, downplay you and a lot more, and you’ve to be ready for that.
But this is the cost you’ve to pay if you want to be independent. Remember that a Freelancer earns more than the average of a traditional employee because of all the risk involvements in it. So more risks mean more returns.

Freelancing gives you the flexibility of working remotely from the place of your choice and the time of your choice, you can day or night, in any place you want, in any way you want, it doesn’t matter whether you’re wearing professional suits or not it’s all flexible and depend upon you.
As you’ll work from your home most often, the work-life balance is better in Freelancing, but sometimes due to a heavy workload, it can get disturbed, but you have to learn to manage both things together.
Due to the freedom, you can choose the projects and clients with whom you would like to work and create flexible working conditions for you.
Choosing a niche and sticking to it, is a key to long-term growth and success in Freelancing. For eg. I’m good at Design, So my niche is Graphic Design.
if your target audience is living near your local area, create a physical portfolio file, if you have to work for clients online, create a digital portfolio website or PDf, which should showcase your expertise, previous work and case studies to educate and inform your clients to take decisions better.
Even though these platforms have never generated any leads or worked for me, I would strongly recommend registering in the top freelancing platform in your industry and updating your portfolio there with your latest work to attract potential clients and get new leads.
As we know your network is your net worth. So please keep connecting with more like-minded people, peer influencers, and previous clients to get new work and collaborate with their projects.
Never miss any opportunity that you get on your way. I have learnt this personally. Generally, when we begin our work, we miss and say ‘no’ to many projects that we get on our way. But you should never do this, and keep working with every project you get initially to gain knowledge about your subject and get an overall idea and exposure.
After you get enough projects then you try to decrease the number of projects with more high paying and quality ones with better work-life balance.
Alongside your studies, start learning new skills to complement your interests. Eventually for the few initial months start doing online internships under various companies to gain exposure to the work, and find solutions and roadmaps from the beginning to the end. Then after your studies are complete, or you get any free time, you can start your freelancing as well.
I don’t think your employers will agree to work as a freelancer after your working hours with the same niche, as it’ll go against their conflict of interest. and can harm their organisation. But if you are a freelancer working for another company from your home, then you can do it for various other companies as well, There’s no problem with it. But find the right balance between work and your personal time. Many freelancers miserably fail to do this.
Yes, Freelancing is 100% legal. You earn and work for the country, You rightfully pay the taxes under ITR 4, There’s nothing wrong about it. You’re like a startup or MSME, who works as an individual worker like a carpenter, painter, plumber or electrician.
you can get paid through UPI, but if you want to be professional, try to register for different kinds of payment gateways like Razorpay to create professional invoices, and payment pages and receive payments in different kinds of payment methods like Debit Card, Credit cards, Netbanking, EMI etc
But if you want to receive payment from other countries to India, you can use a PayPal account and receive the payments in US dollars into your account. Even if you have a Razorpay account you can integrate Paypal into it to receive international payments.
Yes, government employees in India can generally do freelancing in their spare time, as long as it does not conflict with their official duties.
While not always mandatory, it’s advisable to obtain permission from the concerned department or authority before engaging in freelancing activities. This can help avoid any misunderstandings or legal complications.

it all depends upon your skillset, expertise, and demand in the market. In the initial days, focus more on the quantity of work, to get a better understanding of your market. and eventually, you can tweak your prices as per your expertise and experience.

But as an individual, there are no certain licenses required, for digital fields, except for some critical works which might require a license or professional experience certificate.
To manage your clients, deadlines, tasks and projects, you can make use of modern project management tools like Notion, Trello, and Google Workspace to have a seamless workflow and manage things better.

Finding work consistently is the biggest and most important task of any freelancer. Generally, social media influencers and YouTube channels teach us to create content to get clients or register on freelancing platforms, but that’s not true.
Freelancing is a serious business. You’ve to invest initially to get quality clients and have a consistent workflow.
I generally run meta ads campaigns to get leads for my freelance business, and then I call those leads and close the deals. This is the best method that worked for me.

Try to integrate payment into your CRM or invoice software to have a seamless payment collection from the client. Keep at least 50% advance payment for any project to get the excitement to begin the work and be protected about the project from the client shadow-ban you.
it can hit you hard, but sometimes clients will run without paying you and clearing invoices, but you have to accept this fact. and initially, you will face many mistakes and failures, and those things will educate you better to make better decisions in the future.

So the scope and future of graphic designers in India are huge, and any one who has a basic understanding of the English language, typography, colour theory, and layout understanding can become a graphic designer.
Even though there aren’t several education options after the 12th, like medicine, engineering, CA, and government job preparation with a basic degree, the probability of getting a job is very low in India due to the present ongoing job crisis. So I don’t recommend that anybody go for another three years of education after the 12th. The basic education till the 12th is enough. After 12th, just starting new skills acquire them, and apply for internships in different companies for different kinds of industrial exposure.

Yes. It hits differently, right? Storytelling. The motto behind any creative expression. You must have learnt all kinds of design tools, and have installed all kinds of fonts for design. But without a compelling storytelling idea in your mind, you can’t design better.
To become a graphic designer, you have to master storytelling through design. You’ve to learn design trends and various styles of design. You’ve to learn various design software like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Indesign, Figma, etc.
You’ve to understand the basic principles of visual communication and hierarchy.
You’ve to master one design software, either Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator.
Before thinking about starting your graphic design career, ask yourself if are you ready to sit for long hours like 12 hours, or 15 hours continuously to design. Can you design for free? Can you design for learning? Can design as a career suit your future? Is Design the one that attracts you the most? Are you getting attracted towards the designs in your surroundings..? if your answer is yes to all the above questions, then you’re most welcome! You are eligible to become a professional graphic designer.
After deciding all the above, it’s time to decide your mode of education and training for graphic design. Let me tell you that 99% of Graphic Designers are self-trained, including me. Even though I’ve done a small DTP course, it doesn’t match with Graphic Design concepts at all.
The institutes that teach graphic design as private coaching houses only focus on teaching you the tool or software. But in reality, software is secondary. The principle stays the same for any design software.
For eg, if you become a master of design software say Corel, and someday for eg. the company goes out of the country, so you’ve to learn new software. right?
But if you have mastered the basic principles of design and its core fundamentals it, then you can design better with any design software.
I would strongly recommend learning from those who are practically working in the industry in any creative field. If you want to learn Graphic Design, try to approach a graphic designer, with significant experience, and try to learn from him. similarly for other streams like Video Editing, VFX, cinematography etc as well.
The best one is YouTube. The best platform to gain knowledge and skills for FREE. In this 2024-25 period, the knowledge is abundant and sufficient on YouTube, to teach all topics from basic to advanced is available on it. Just search, watch, keep the notes, practice and learn.
It’s difficult. It’s hard. but in the beginning only. Once you deep dive into it. you’ll find it easy.
Understand aesthetics in deep. Learn about the colours and observe nature. It would teach you better about the colours and their mixing with each other.
Watch more creatives and creative expressions like movies, and posters on social media, or other web platforms, Try to dive deep into them and understand the concepts by decoding the layers and the story and idea behind that design.
Learn the trending industry standard software in the market. If you have to pay, then pay. Don’t try to use unlicensed software, you’ll gradually lose interest and respect towards your profession if you do so.
Grab the license, and practice hard for at least two to three months day and night. Trust me you’ll become inevitable, invincible.
If you can pay for online platforms like LinkedIn Learning, Udemy or other well-known course platforms, then you can learn all the content in a chronological manner and understand it better. Try to do online courses only, because offline courses or live courses will cost you a lot more and give you less and less freedom to explore more because of time and resource limitations.
Follow a lifestyle of maintaining an aesthetic lifestyle, like maintaining a clean design space, a clean aesthetic display, surroundings, your studio etc, to make everything look professional. This will help you to focus. And ultimately the focus will give you the results.
Okay, now after you learn everything, it’s time to build your portfolio. Unlike any other job, the employer will ask for your portfolio to give you a post of graphic designer, not any kind of degree or diploma, Update them on your social media profiles and other portfolio platforms, and maintain them with a PDF, Website or platforms like Behance to host them.
Try to show your uniqueness in your design. Try to find inspiration from existing great designers. It’ll inspire you a lot.
After you feel like you’re ready. You’ve learnt the design. you’ve designed your portfolio. It’s time for some serious task. What’s better than Job Training?
If you don’t get any job, don’t worry, try to apply for internships in MNCs, They will happily offer internships just to make you learn, but remember your portfolio must be attractive to get this opportunity.
Utilise this time to learn more deeply about the industry and future growth trajectory.
After diving into the graphic design industry, you can explore other fields, like Video Editing, Motion design, UX Design, Film making etc to expand your career and maybe start an agency in the future or a production house.
You don’t know. But working hard with the right direction and right plan is the key.

Join various private design communities in Reddit, Discord etc to gain exposure to other creative minds and their style of working, which can help you grow better.
